Temple Run VR is a Virtual Reality Spin Off coming to Gear VR
Imangi Studios has announced that it will support the Samsung Gear VR with their cult classic Temple Run. To be more specific, with Temple Run VR. Temple Run VR is an all new Virtual Reality version of the Temple Run-Franchise, which has been downloaded for iOS and Android over 100 Million times. Temple Run VR’s setting will take place in a winter wonderland, where a yeti (?) is coming to get you. See below for the first screenshots from Temple Run VR.
What is Temple Run VR based on?
Now don’t get me wrong: Temple Run itself is a nice little gem in the App Store which holds its own with dynamic gameplay and a very nice progression curve. For those who have not played the original: Temple Run is considered to be the first 3D-Endless Runner ever. These games normally do not have fixed level structures – the paths you are running on are thrown at you differently every time you have a go at it. Collect gold and upgrade your characters abilities. The goal is to run really far and set new records. Since the runs are always very short, Temple Run turned out to be an ideal game for Smartphone users.
Temple Run VR is a fine example of what makes Virtual Reality games so different
It seems fitting that a well known franchise is taking on the responsibility to make potential Virtual Reality users comfortable with a new device. Temple Run VR is probably not that different from the other version of the game. The real difference comes from the feeling it really is you who is running, and not some kind of character. By making the switch from 3rd Person Runner to First Person Runner, the next step to more immersive gaming is done. Or as a friend of mine put it: “Temple Run VR will give me a heart attack every 5 seconds, I want it NOW!”.
